Tori Nichel Built Maison Black So Black Designers Could Own the Front Window

Let me tell you about Tori Nichel.

Four cities. One holiday season. And a platform built on a simple, stubborn premise — that Black designers belong at the front of the store, not in the footnote. That premise is now a national retail partnership and a $50,000 vote of confidence.

The Work

Nichel is the founder of Maison Black, a New York City fashion platform dedicated to elevating Black designers through storytelling, commerce and community. Its biggest move yet came in late 2025, when H&M launched The Style Shop, Curated by Maison Black — an in-store experience spotlighting Black designers and creatives. It debuted November 30 at H&M’s newly opened store at The Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles, then traveled to Houston, Chicago and New York City across four weeks, with each stop featuring local Black-owned fashion, beauty, homeware and art brands. “H&M is proud to spotlight the creativity and entrepreneurship of Black designers,” said Donna Dozier Gordon, H&M Americas’ head of inclusion and diversity. “As a destination for discovery of Black designers, our partnership with H&M amplifies our mission to foster the community and create revenue-generating opportunities for Black designers, artists and beauty brands,” Nichel added. In July 2026, Ferrero North America and the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. named Maison Black a winner of the Famous Amos Ingredients for Success initiative — $50,000 in capital plus mentorship, networking and educational resources.

The Roots

Nichel came up inside corporate fashion. The Milwaukee Business Journal described her as a former design director at Kohl’s — a résumé that gave her an intimate read on how big retail decides what gets made, stocked and seen. She took that knowledge and aimed it at the gap she knew best: Black designers with talent, craft and ambition but far too few shelves. Maison Black was built to be the shelf — a curated destination that puts designers in front of shoppers and gives them a story, not just a spot on a rack.

Why You Should Know Her

Because the model travels. A weekend pop-up can spotlight a handful of brands; a partnership with a global retailer changes the math for an entire cohort of founders who suddenly gain foot traffic, shelf space and a national audience. Nichel is proving that platform-building is its own kind of ownership — and that when Black designers get the front window, they sell.
