Dr. Danielle R. Busby Is Making Black Mental Wellness a Practice, Not a Slogan
Let me tell you about Dr. Danielle Busby.
There’s a psychologist who studies the hardest question in her field — why Black youth are at higher risk for suicide, and what actually helps — and then turns the research into tools real families can use. Her name is Dr. Danielle R. Busby, and she’s one of the co-founders of Black Mental Wellness.
The Work
Dr. Busby is a licensed clinical psychologist, and she’s a faculty member at an academic medical center, where she leads a Data and Evaluation Program focused on child traumatic stress. Her research centers on child trauma and suicide prevention and intervention among Black youth.
She’s also a co-founder and the Vice President of Professional Relations & Liaison at Black Mental Wellness Corp. — a group of clinical psychologists who recognized that culturally competent care wasn’t being delivered at the scale the community needed, and decided to build it themselves.
Her through-line: closing the gap between what research proves and what actually reaches patients. That’s the distance where so many good ideas die. She refuses to let them.
The Roots
Dr. Busby was born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Southfield, Michigan. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan, then her master’s and PhD in clinical psychology from George Washington University.
She completed her pre-doctoral internship — with a child trauma specialization — at Duke University Medical Center, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship. She’s a member of the American Psychological Association’s Leadership Development Institute, serves on the SelfSea Digital Wellbeing Advisory Board, and has been a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for more than 15 years.
Why You Should Know Her
Here’s why Dr. Danielle Busby matters right now: Black youth deserve mental health care built for their actual lives, grounded in evidence, and delivered without barriers. That’s not a small ask — it takes researchers willing to sit with the toughest data and organizers willing to translate it.
She’s both. And she’s not waiting for the system to catch up. She’s building the culturally responsive version of it herself — one study, one program, one organization at a time.
