Dr. Joy Harden Bradford Built Therapy for Black Girls Into a Movement

Let me tell you about Dr. Joy Harden Bradford.

There’s a psychologist who looked around and asked a simple question: where does a Black woman go to find a therapist who truly gets it? Her answer became a podcast, a national directory, and a movement. Her name is Dr. Joy Harden Bradford — and she made mental health care easier to find for a whole community.

The Work

Dr. Joy is the founder and host of Therapy for Black Girls — an award-winning podcast and platform that does two big things at once: it talks honestly about Black women’s mental health, and it connects people to therapists who understand their lives.

She also wrote *Sisterhood Heals: The Transformative Power of Healing in Community*, a book that argues something radical in a culture obsessed with going it alone: healing happens in relationship, not in isolation. It’s now out in paperback.

And through the Holding Space Foundation, she’s kept pushing the mission past the microphone — turning conversation into access.

The Roots

Dr. Joy is a licensed psychologist who earned her PhD in counseling psychology (University of Georgia) and built her career by refusing to separate clinical rigor from cultural understanding. She knows the data — Black women face distinct barriers to mental health care — and she has spent her career removing them one by one.

What started as one podcast grew into a platform, a therapist directory, live community events like Healing in Real Time, and a book that reads like a conversation with the wisest friend you have.

Why You Should Know Her

Here’s why Dr. Joy Harden Bradford matters: it is one thing to say “therapy helps.” It’s another thing to build the thing that makes therapy findable. She did that — for Black girls, Black women, and anyone who needed to hear that their healing was possible, and that they didn’t have to do it alone.

She took a question that had gone unanswered for too long and turned it into a whole ecosystem of care.
